As for myself, although I've been lucky enough to be able to visit the Franklin sites, I did so as part of a documentary, with all the creature comforts attended to. The true Franklin explorers are members of the “butt in the blizzard” club -- Nature's own initiation ritual! -- having returned to my armchair after my brief sojourn there, I agree it's the best place to contemplate the "big picture."Russell Potterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11023313195827310776noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3873756940955163469.post-69551343168428724982015-07-22T09:11:17.504-07:002015-07-22T09:11:17.504-07:00When reading through those few paragraphs above, I...When reading through those few paragraphs above, I was surprised by the number of names listed. Some jogged my memory as I had "forgotten" about so and so etc. Nice to see them listed though. It clearly shows the breadth of the efforts undertaken in this enterprise.
I am lucky in that I have the luxury of reading the results of everyone's efforts from the comfort of my living room. A cold winter's night, a good fire, and a "Franklin" book are a great combination to pass the time. So a big thank you to everyone for enriching my knowledge of this fascinating story.
Sitting in my chair by the fire does have its trade offs of course. It means that while I don't have to endure the ice cold waters and dive under 6' of ice to explore the Erebus, it also means I won't be there for the "Eureka" moment on the next dive when they find the stash of mint condition papers and diaries all sitting there waiting for discovery. I'll miss the thrill of "being there" and will have to enjoy the moment via the internet or on paper once the report is published.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08685387404989395574noreply@blogger.com
