I think none of them had any polar experience either, but at least each one of them was experienced in either skiing or endurance sports, and they were given some preparational training in Norway beforehand.<br /><br />One of them was Hermann Maier, who has four overall world cup titles in alpine ski racing. His comment after returning from the pole was something like: “I thought I knew what cold was. I was dead wrong.”<br /><br />Have you heard about this undertaking? There’s a lot of articles about it in German, if you like I could translate one.
