A good deal of research has actually been done on these engines, and there are some quite exciting conclusions -- have a look at Peter Carney's blog here and ShipBuilder's blog here. I don't think we're quite at the point of uncovering the engine of HMS "Erebus," but I have high hopes for next year!Russell Potterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11023313195827310776noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3873756940955163469.post-76413380944193777622016-09-07T01:50:39.831-07:002016-09-07T01:50:39.831-07:00I am waiting with baited breath for further examin...I am waiting with baited breath for further examination of HMS Erebus to reveal whether the railway locomotive that supplied her auxiliary power has survived in any recognisable form. I discovered that two time expired railways locos (one from the London & Greenwich Railway and one from the London & Birmingham Railway) had been installed in the aft holds of Erebus and Terror, and a drive shaft from the wheels led to a propellor. Here is a link to a short article I wrote about it.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/40718050/A%20Present%20for%20Archaeologists%20of%20the%20Future.pdfNickFhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07994591292106849454noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3873756940955163469.post-84049685796935746242016-09-02T16:07:44.911-07:002016-09-02T16:07:44.911-07:00I am glad the "politics" of it all are b...I am glad the "politics" of it all are being worked out. This is just too good a story to sit on the sidelines while bureaucrats sort things thru!
I had to laugh at your quote "are tangled up together". Interesting choice of words, rather than being the more poetic "woven together", tangled up seems to be the more accurate expression!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08685387404989395574noreply@blogger.com
